俗名山蘿卜根根,为野生多年草本植物。春季由宿根長出方莖,高1—2尺,羽狀复叶对生,叶片卵圓形前端尖,叶边有鋸齿,花开叶間,白色带紫。根为紅黄色之長根,叢生于莖下即是續断。挖掘时間最好是农曆七、八月,挖来續断根即洗浄泥沙,切去須蘆和小尾,用带烟的微火燻干,使外呈黄色,內呈藍綠色,干后再切去兩头小的部份。每根約長3—5寸,按其長短綑为小把,以木箱裝紧。品質以粗壯性軟,內呈藍綠色为佳。
