皮博迪埃塞克斯博物馆(Peabody Essex Museum,后文简称PEM)源于皮博迪博物馆,成立于1799年,是美国最古老的博物馆。博物馆的建立者是美国最早的一批企业家,他们从国际贸易中积累财富,并开始了美国本土对于亚洲、非洲和大洋洲艺术的收藏。1799年,刚刚独立16年的美国依旧面临着各种生存的挑战,在文化事业方面更加没有经验。但是这群企业家却将自己见过的世界通过藏品展现在了其他美国人面前,当人们以好奇的眼光打量这些异域珍奇之时,也逐渐以开放的心态接纳这个世界。
Peabody Essex Museum (hereinafter referred to as PEM) from the Peabody Museum, founded in 1799, is the oldest museum in the United States. The museum’s creators are among the first group of entrepreneurs in the United States who have accumulated wealth from international trade and started a collection of Native American art in Asia, Africa and Oceania. In 1799, the United States, which has just been independent for 16 years, still faces various survival challenges and has no experience in cultural undertakings. However, these entrepreneurs show the world they have seen before other Americans through collections. When people look curiously at exotic allusions, they gradually accept the world with an open mind.
