鄞州区有林业用地101.82万亩,森林覆盖率49.12%,活立木总蓄积199万立方米,其中中幼林占83%。经过长期的封山育林,鄞州的山林绝大部分已经绿化或者成林,但是部分森林也出现了藤蔓丛生、目的树种长势较弱、蓄积量偏低的问题。为了改善林木生长条件,提高林分质量,最大限度地发挥森林的综合效益,早在上世纪90年代,鄞州区就与华东师范大学一起在天童林场开展了以近自然林业理论为指导的森林
