“愁”字产生于殷周盛行卜卦与祭祀的时代。愁,从心,秋声。秋,从火,(龟灬)声,小篆秋字省龟,大篆不省。《说文解字》:“(龟灬),灼龟不兆也。从龟、火。春秋传曰:‘卜战,龟魚,不兆。’读若焦。”从《正字通》到《说文段注》、《说文释例》等等皆认为(龟灬),即焦,音义皆同,只是火上作龟与火上作隹的区别,今本《左传》均作“龟焦”。故秋,为灼龟祈年而收获的季节,愁,为灼龟不兆、吉凶未卜的心情。
