At about 8:00 on September 8, 2008, a special tailings dam collapse occurred at Xintai Mining Co., Ltd. (iron ore) in Xiangfen County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province. As of 17 Oct. 5, the death toll rose to 271 . After the incident, the leaders of the Party Central Committee and the State Council attached great importance to making timely instructions. On the afternoon of September 10, member of the State Council and Secretary-General of the State Council, Ma Kai, went to the dam site to guide the rescue and aftercare work, visited the wounded and sick and condolences to the families of the victims.
