繁盛于清初的才子佳人小说是中国古代小说中一种较具文人特色的题材类型。在故事讲述过程中,这一类作品一般会选取学富五车、儒雅风流的才子作为主人公,同时引入游学、应举等涉及地域流动的情节,对才子游寓他乡的大致过程进行连续而系统的描述。考察这些描述可以发现,清初才子佳人小说中的走出乡里、出游天下的才子在漫游动力与目的、所历行程以及所观所见等方面具有非常多的相似之处;上述创作倾向的形成既与晚明时期的小品创作遥相呼应,又受到晚明相应社会风气的间接影响,同时亦与部分才子佳人小说作者的前朝情结有关。从某种意义上讲,清初才子佳人小说所描述的游学、应举情节与本朝关联不大,它们实则是适时文人托稗官之俗笔而展开的对晚明社会情境的一种回顾与追忆。
