In 2006, researchers at the University of California (UCSB) and Intel Corporation introduced the world’s first electrically pumped hybrid silicon laser. The device takes advantage of the light-emitting characteristics of III-V semiconductors and uses mature CMOS processes to fabricate lasers on silicon wafers, opening the door to inexpensive, production-ready silicon optics. Seven years have passed very quickly, and many people think that the hybrid silicon photonics revolution is truly everything today. The industry has developed a wide range of hybrid devices, ranging from laser sources and optical amplifiers to high-speed modulators, waveguides and polarization components, to name but a few, and have formed photonic integrated circuits
