隋唐以降,中国书画的气息之中渐渐流露出禅机佛意,佛教与禅学被大量融入其中。唐代王维的可以被誉为是禅宗画的开山鼻祖将中国绘画引向了新的高度。与此同时,到了南宋,一些主要直接以禅宗题材或禅宗人物为描绘对象的道释卷轴画,以及受禅宗思想影响的画家绘制的禅意画,再者是相当一部分院体画家所绘制的其他题材的水墨画作品则对日本的禅宗绘画产生了深远的影响。
