In 1947, Fotet and Lynch first proposed the link between mother’s chickenpox in the first trimester of pregnancy and congenital malformations of their children. Srabstein and others first proposed in 1974 to establish the existence of this syndrome. We set out specific criteria for determining the relationship between early mother’s chickenpox infection and neonatal malformations. Methods Thirty children aged 1 day to 15 years old had congenital abnormalities associated with infection with chickenpox or shingles in the first 6 months of pregnancy. The criteria for determining the relationship between a mother’s infection with a varicella-zoster virus and a congenital anomalous child are as follows: (1) a mother has varicella zoster infection during pregnancy; and (2) congenital skin lesions consistent with the distribution of the skin. (3) intrauterine infection with varicella zoster virus blood
