The plasticity of clay has a great influence on the balling of raw materials. Plastic clay is good, the raw material is easy to become a ball, and the quality of the pellet is also good. The plasticity of clay is determined by its particle size. The finer the particles, the better the plasticity. Particles with a particle size of less than 0.005 mm (5 μ) are referred to as “cohes.” Clay with high clay content is plastic. The level of plasticity is represented by the “plasticity index” (referred to as plasticity index). Plasticity index greater than 15 is strongly malleable clay; 7 to 15 is moderately malleable clay; 1 to 7 is weakly malleable clay.
