Individuals with basic literacy have the knowledge and skills to apply this knowledge and skills in a new environment. Knowledge is at the heart of sporting literacy and is the basis for knowing what to do, what to do and when to do it. This article argues that sports literacy includes not only how to accomplish knowledge, but also the ability to apply knowledge and make use of knowledge to innovate. Since 1930, scholars have articulated the role of knowledge in the design of physical education curriculum, which focuses on transferring knowledge to physical education through a series of interdisciplinary approaches. This emphasis on physical education has been extended to current interdisciplinary courses such as Science, Sports and Me, and Science for a Healthy Life.
