NASA(美国宇航局)预测,今后十年用于航天飞机飞行的工业气体消耗量将急剧增长。今年虽然只有两次飞行,但到1990年时每年要有40次飞行计划。那时的液氢用量将是现在的30倍,液氧是12倍,气态氮是5倍。液氢是航天飞机真正的燃料,液氧是氧化剂气态氮用于使航天飞机外部燃料箱加压和清洗。联合碳化物公司林德分部为第一架航天飞机提供了液氧和氮气,空气产品公司提供了液氢。
NASA predicts that industrial gas consumption for space shuttle flights will increase dramatically over the next decade. Although there are only two flights this year, there will be 40 flight plans each year by 1990. At that time, the amount of liquid hydrogen will be 30 times now, liquid oxygen is 12 times, and gaseous nitrogen is 5 times. Liquid hydrogen is the real fuel for the space shuttle. Liquid oxygen is the oxidant. The gaseous nitrogen is used to pressurize and clean the shuttle’s external fuel tank. Union Carbide Linde Division provided liquid oxygen and nitrogen for the first space shuttle, and Air Products supplied liquid hydrogen.
