After the founding of new China, Chairman Mao made the strategic decision of “establishing a strong air force on the basis of the army.” I was sent to Mudanjiang Aviation School to learn to fly. I overcame language difficulties, studied aviation theory hard and mastered flying skills under miscellaneous conditions. After six months of studying, I took the first solo flight in the class of 50 students. After China’s first actual nuclear bomb was developed, Premier Zhou pointed out: Pilots who serve as the targets of their mission should be the most politically reliable and technically proficient cadres to fly in the most experienced cadres above the regiment level. On November 30, 1970, I went to the Northwest Nuclear Test Base with revolutionary pride. I took off every day for hard training, throwing 150 pieces of the same size as a nuclear bomb
