Japan’s manufacturing activity contracted in January, but the rate of contraction slowed for the first time in four months as Japan slowly recovered from the export-led recession. Japan’s January seasonally adjusted manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) rose to 47.7 from 45.0 in December 2012; December’s manufacturing PMI was the lowest in more than three years. Some analysts said that in early 2013, Japan’s manufacturing industry is still facing challenges, and many of the key indicators for measuring the health of the industry are still in a contraction zone. Although the slowdown slowed down basically, the data still indicate that the officially announced industrial output will decline again.
