The steady-state fluorescence and fluorescence decay behavior of a series of biphenyl group-containing side-chain liquid crystal polyacetylenes with different lengths of spacer groups were studied. For comparison, one of the monomers was selected as the model compound. It is shown that both the polymer and the monomer show a fluorescence emission that emits a biphenyl group derived from the polymer side chain.As the length of the spacer decreases, the fluorescence intensity of the polymer decreases.Fluorescence decay results show that the monomer Fluorescence decay can be fitted to a single exponential decay while the fluorescence decay of the polymer fits to a triple decay.This decay of the triple exponential decay may be caused by quenching of the local high concentration of the solution and hindered rotation of the side chain biphenyl groups The solvent effect indicates that the interaction between solvent and biphenyl groups increases with increasing solvent polarity.
