Past experience has led network managers to realize that when purchasing network products, it is important to pay attention to whether the technology of the product has a wide range of applications. Obviously, no one wants to be confined to a single vendor’s product. However, network vendors disregard this fact and they take risks for their own benefit. Recently, the issue of standardization of network technology has become all the rage. With the introduction of one standard and another network product by vendors, people have become increasingly confused and complicated about the definition of standards. The mediocre performance of Solaris between Windows TCP/IP is a typical example of the standardization of network technologies. Sun claims that this problem occurs because Microsoft uses non-standardized TCP/IP. However, most other vendors of Unix platform products use this non-standardized technology for the best results on Windows clients. People can’t help but ask: Which company is Sun and Microsoft using non-standard technologies? Does the standard of a technology have to be reviewed by the IETF or other industry associations? Network managers
