戏曲生脚是南戏传奇脚色体制中特有的行当,其出现必与旦脚搭配,担任剧中男女主人公,敷演故事。而元杂剧中有旦无生,与旦配戏的是末脚。南戏传奇演剧中生旦并举,北曲杂剧则是正末、正旦分立。那么,南戏传奇中的“生”必与杂剧中的“末”有不可分割的联系。一般我们所说的角色行当,其实是两个概念。角色是剧中人物的称呼,如《西厢记》中的张君瑞;而行当则是剧中脚色的类别,是戏曲程式化演出的分工,如杂剧的末和南戏的生。通常把生、旦、净、末、丑当成角色是错误的,这是戏曲脚色名称,而在脚色制形成之前的宋杂剧里是叫杂剧色,又是另一个概念。
