For 20 years, the United States has provided Taiwan with a large amount of weapons and equipment on the basis of the so-called “Taiwan Relations Act.” In order to develop military strength and serve as a policy of “partial security and unification”, the Taiwan authorities spared no effort in accelerating the pace of arms readiness and military expenditures increased year by year. Owing to Taiwan’s own limited military science and technology level and capability, the Taiwan authorities therefore procured advanced procurement of advanced weaponry and equipment as the main source of military supplies and regarded it as an important means of enhancing military capabilities. A large part of Taiwan’s military budget is being spent on arms purchases abroad.
