The prevalence of diabetes has been growing exponentially over the past 60 years, implying that it has become impractical to rely solely on specialist health professionals to manage people with diabetes. Since the seventies of the last century, more and more primary hospitals and community doctors have begun to treat people with diabetes. With advances in diabetes management-related devices and treatment options, patients with diabetes have become more accessible to the community and this has also improved their quality of life. There has also been a major evolution in diabetes care strategies, where the importance of tight blood glucose control for patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes is gaining more widespread awareness. The importance of sharing diabetes management experience with doctors in primary and secondary medical institutions has also been recognized. In short, management of diabetic patients has been significantly improved since 1952.
