Allelic relationships between the polymorphism of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) site on human major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and susceptibility to a range of autoimmune and infectious diseases have been established. This is evidenced by the high levels of circulating TNF-alpha in confirmed patients with clinically severe cutaneous mucosal leishmaniasis (MCL).
