该研究以美国网络上即时通讯、微博及电子书网站上的出版物为语料样本,分析了当代美国网民在线交际中所使用英语的语言特征。研究发现,大量使用缩写、缩略、重拼、标点符号、键盘符号、表情符号、图形、语码转换、语码混合、大小写、加粗、反斜等以获得特殊交际效果是在线交际语言的主要特征。作者认为,在线交际行为正挑战着传统的言语交际方式,在线交际的语言特征映射着当代快节奏的社会生活,也预示着未来英语语言变化的新趋势。
