The aluminum industry attributes its existence to a thin layer of aluminum oxide that prevents the metal from spontaneously oxidizing in the air and corroding it with water. When the metal surface is damaged, the oxide film instantly covers the newly formed metal surface and quickly returns the surface to its original state. Since the molecular volume of the oxide in the oxidation reaction is slightly larger than the molecular volume of the consumed metal by 1.5 times, the surface layer is under compressive stress. In this way, not only does the oxide continuously cover the metal, but it also allows some deformation of the substrate
