The Yi people living in the immeasurable mountainous areas and the Ailao Mountain areas in the middle of Yunnan Province have in the past been called “Tujia people”, which means that the indigenous peoples are actually a branch of the Yi ethnic group. Their clothes, customs and languages have their own characteristics. In order to meet the needs of cultivation, the Yi people who plant dryland crops on the mountainside are all basically one family. They live scatteredly on the gently sloping hillsides with a considerable distance between them. However, those who planted rice grew slightly lower, but all built 35 courtyards, forming a “unique village,” with a slightly flat terrace above them. In traffic along the more open valleys, there are more villages where people live.
