Alice Walker is an outstanding black female writer in the contemporary American literary world. She has published a large number of novels describing the struggle of black women for political, economic, gender and racial equality. Alice Walker was born on 9 February 1944 to a sharecropping farm in southern Georgia, where her parents were ancestors of slaves and Indians, and Alice was the youngest of eight children in the family. Studying at the University of Sparman in Atlanta in 1961, Alice was awarded a scholarship to catch up with the upsurge of the civil rights movement in the United States.
