鳥禪幕本為哈薩克草原一個古部落,遊牧於粟特(阿姆河中游支流澤拉夫善河流域)與鳥孫(今伊犁河流域)之間。漢武帝征和二年(前92),烏禪幕投奔匈奴,東遷新疆天山地區,成為匈奴統治西域的重要生力軍之一。匈奴“五單于爭立”之際(前58),鳥禪幕隨避難西域的匈奴單于之子稽侯珊東遷蒙古高原,輔佐稽侯珊登上匈奴單于寶座。我們最近發現一些線索,說明鳥禪幕文化就是哈薩克南部塔斯莫拉文化(Tasmola Culture,約前700—前92)。該文化最大特點是採用鬍鬚墓,而新疆天山地區和蒙古草原的鬍鬚墓皆為鳥禪幕遺跡。司馬遷寫《史記》時代,匈奴墓“不封不樹”。烏禪幕東遷蒙古高原後,匈奴單于開始構築巨大墳塚。烏禪幕東遷蒙古草原,不僅為匈奴文化帶來中亞文明因素,而且影響到漢代中原藝術。草擬此文,見教于海內外研究者。
