Reuben Kadish’s art deny the idea that self-expression and social responsibility are counter-productive. In California in the 1930s, the artist began his work when he was a very active painter and muralist in the community and a student of the Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueiros. With a kind of historical awareness, he opposed contemporary racism and oppression. The masked image he showed in the frescoes of Morelia, Mexico, may be Medieval Spain’s Inquisition, or as a terrorist to the modern U.S. Kuomintang Kuracan racism. As a symbol, it is beyond the age.
