Two new studies have reported a close relationship between spontaneous chronic pancreatitis and mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) gene. Jonathan Cohn and his team at Duke Medical Center in Durham, United States, studied CFTR genes in 27 patients with unexplained pancreatitis but without signs of a classic cystic fibrosis lung disease. Eight patients had mutations known to cause traditional cystic fibrosis; five patients had alleles that made the patient susceptible to obstructive sperm deficiency without pulmonary disease. The number of mutations is 11 times that of the general population. In 3 patients
