The 36th International Systemic Functional Congress was held in Tsinghua University in Beijing in July, 2009, during which Professor M.A.K. Halliday of The University of Sydney was interviewed by Professor Hu Zhuanglin of Peking University and Professor Zhu Yongsheng of Fudan University. This is the transcript based on the interview. Questions asked and discussed during the interview include issues concerning developments of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the concept of appliable linguistics, SFL studies in the Chinese context, grammatical metaphor, and language generation and machine translation.
