2005年7月22日,中国网通与故宫博物院在故宫联合举行了“皇家电话局”揭牌仪式。对此事,首都多家媒体纷纷给予了报道。其中,《北京日报》以“95岁紫禁城皇家电话局重开张”为题予以报道,称:“建成于1910年的清朝皇宫第一个‘皇家电话局’,在故宫得到复原后……重新投入使用。在这里,游客可以用仿上世纪初的电话机给家人挂个电话……紫禁城内曾安装了10门用户交换机,并在后宫的建福宫、储秀宫和长春宫设专线电话共6部,这是我国最早也是唯一的皇家电话局。”《北京晨报》的报道则认为:“作为故宫建院80周年的庆典活动之一,‘皇家电话局’既可以作为故宫展示中国近代科技发展的一处景点,同时又是中国中央政府使用电话的起点,将成为供中国乃至世界各国人士研究的胜地”。
