Based on the interpretation of Wenzheng Heng, a famous connoisseur in the late Ming Dynasty, this article examines the status of exotic objects in the late Ming scholars and explores the cultural appropriation process of these imported objects. With the tributary system and the commencement of overseas trade, a large number of imported goods into the Ming Empire, became a common artifact of the Ming Dynasty literati life. In the process, these imported goods also went through a process of defamiliarization and were re-endowed with cultural meanings, becoming a means by which scholars can practice social segregation.
