在小流域水土保持综合治理和小型水库及塘坝工程的溢洪道设计中,长期以来,绝大多数都采用了传统的开敞式和侧槽式等溢洪道,这种类型的溢洪道工程量都比较大,而且还需要建输水建筑物才能满足下游用水,因此很不容易配套成型。所以各地都有许多小型水库和塘坝处于险库状态或被洪水冲毁的例子,造成了相当严重的经济损失。近年来,国内外有许多研究单位研究出了新结构溢洪道,如马蹄状溢流堰式的、半圆形或半圆连拱形的、n形或双侧溢流堰式和双竖井溢洪道等等。这些新式溢洪道都是用合理增加溢流堰长度、减少溢流水深、紧凑工程结构的方法,来达到减少溢洪道和整个蓄水工程量目的的。
