Hydrochloric acid treatment significantly improved the initial electrochemical hydrogen evolution and the cyclic voltammetry of the atomized MlNi3 6 Co0 7Mn0 3Al0 4 alloy. The electrochemical impedance of the hydride electrode was analyzed by a complex nonlinear fitting program. XPS and AES analysis showed that , The surface of the alloy treated with hydrochloric acid formed a nickel-rich layer. • Nickel was reduced to highly active nickel during charging, which was the main reason for the improvement of the electrochemical performance of the alloy
