在我国古代封建社会,自从儒家思想成为历代统治集团进行思想统治的工具以后,许多有独立见解的人或有所作为的人,要想在某个问题上提出新的看法,或在某件事情上有所革新,都不得不在“宗经”、“复古”的旗号下进行,历代文论家关于文与道的论述就是其中最典型的例子。关于文与道的关系问题,早在韩、柳提倡的古文运动以前就开始涉及到了。问题的提出,主要是针对内容贫乏、形式僵化的骈体文。骈文的兴起,对我国文学的发展曾经起过一定的积极作用,其中的优秀作品当属一笔宝贵的文化遗产,值得传诵和借鉴。但骈文发展到后来弊病愈来愈突出。充斥文坛的大量骈文,往往忽略作品中积极健康的思想内容,片面追求辞藻的华丽,讲究音调声韵的格式,卖弄知识,堆砌典故,致使文风靡弱,形式僵化。这样的作品,既不能真实地反映社会现实生活,也不能抒发作者的真情实感,
