菊花原产中国,在平安时代(794-1194)传到日本。平安时代开始视其为代表秋天的花。中国人喜欢黄菊,日本人喜欢白菊,随着天气寒冷,渐渐变成红色,尤为喜欢。受中国的影响,日本平安时代开始有了重阳节赏菊的习惯。日本人发明的丝棉菊露被认为具有永葆青春的功效。因为后鸟羽上皇喜欢画菊,十六瓣菊花成了皇室的徽章,日本国花的象征。这说明日本文化的形成与发展与中国文化的渊源关系。
