[Reported by LA-10075-MS, Los Alamos Institute, USA] 镅-241 is a very useful lanthanide isotope. At present, more than 99% of the U-241 sold in the U.S. market is used for the production of neutron sources needed for logging in the oil industry. The best historical level for using U-241 in the United States is about 2000 grams/year. The study found that it is economically uneconomical to produce a very pure “medical grade” thorium-238 using the Irradiation-241 method.
