In 2002, more than 3 million people died of AIDS, which means that the number of AIDS deaths per day worldwide is 8,000, or 1 in 10 seconds dies of AIDS. Of the 42 million currently infected with HIV, about 5 million to 6 million are in urgent need of antiretroviral (ARV) treatment compared with only 300,000 in developing countries receiving ARV treatment and fewer than 50,000 in Africa AIDS patients receive ARV treatment. The inability of ARVs to treat millions of AIDS patients has become an increasingly urgent global health problem. WHO Director-General Lee Jongwook said: “To empower millions of AIDS patients with ARV, we must change the way we think and act and save the crisis with new strategies.” WHO and UNAIDS Reaffirm Commitment to 3 Million AIDS Patients by the End of 2005 ARV treatment options. According to the current plan, by the end of 2005 about less than 1 million patients can receive ARV treatment. WHO, UN-AIDS and other partners are currently developing a global strategy to achieve the above
