The list of corrupt officials in Shanxi got a new number. As reported by China’s Central Discipline Inspection Committee on August 23, Nie Chunyu, secretary-general of Shanxi Provincial CPC Committee was subject to the investigation due to serious discipline and law violations.
Along with Nie also came out Cheng Chuanping, CPC chief of Shanxi. They were the fifth and sixth provincial-level governmental officials in Shanxi that had been investigated, “laurelling”Shanxi with the title as the province with most corrupt provincial-level governmental officials after the 18th CPC Congress.
Nie Chunyu had been working in Luliang for eight years, in which he experienced the best time of coal industry and created the said “economic development miracle of Luliang”. It is said that a batch of “coal bosses” with untold wealth came out during his reign, but the “miracle” also hinted his fall.
Before he came to Luliang in 2003, he spent 19 years on theoretical study. During his eight years’stay in Luliang, he made full use of his theoretical expertise and the abundant natural resources of Luliang. Thanks to the dramatic increase of coal price, Luliang upgraded from the least developed city in Shanxi in 2003 to the fourth largest city in terms of the GDP in 2011. In 2010, the annual GDP growth of Luliang increased 21%, the highest in the entire province.
The glory of economic growth was accompanied with the infestation of corruption. Nie Chunyu’s fall was reportedly related to the cases of Shanxi coal boss Xing Libin and Song Lin, former board chairman of China Resources.
