In the course of our screening programme for new antibiotics fromsoil samples,the antlbiotic 854,which shows strong activity in vitro againstGram- positive,Gram-negative bacteria and mycobacteria,was isolatedfrom the culture filtrate of strain SIIA 1.242 which was collected atChengdu city.Its components’UV and IR absorption spectra and physicochemical characteristics place this antibiotic in the group of antibiotics——destomycin,hygromycin,and marcomycin.In this report,we present results of a taxonomic study of the antibiotic 854-producing organism.This strain was compared with the destomycin-and hygromycin-producing organisms,and was identified to belong to hygroscopicus speciesof the genus Streptomyces,but there are some differences among them.
