Crop breeders made a great contribution to the agricultural and economic development of the United States. By improving the efficiency of agricultural production, they have improved the economic conditions of peasants and promoted the structural adjustment and development of rural communities. Since World War II, agricultural development and the improvement of living standards in rural areas have been strongly promoted by encouraging the industrialization of agricultural production patterns and subsidies. Breeders develop new technologies and provide suitable varieties for agriculture. Their main contribution is to cultivate new varieties of high-yield crops adapted to environmental changes and mechanized harvesting and transportation. With the constant changes in society, technology and economy, the mode of agricultural production and management has evolved and the rural population has been constantly shifting outward. At the same time, a variety of social and economic factors have prompted the emergence of new food system models such as local dietism and community agriculture. The Sustainability Index reflects the desire of large retailers to be more transparent about the relationship between consumers and food production. These factors, along with the United States’ focus on the quality of rural life, provide breeders with opportunities to address new client needs, develop technologies that fit their values, and serve traditional customers in new ways.
