Fluoxetine hydrochloride is a potent antidepressant and has potential therapeutic effects on alcoholism, anxiety and chronic pain. This article reports the facile synthesis of optically active fluoxetine and its analogues, such as norfluoxetine. Its key synthetic intermediates are 3-phenyl-3-hydroxypropylamine [C6H5CH (OH) CH2CH2NH2], which is prepared from the racemate of ethyl ester and benzaldehyde in two steps with high yield. then
