Running to catch my flight to Miami, I was hit with a major wave of déjà vu[似曾经历过的错觉]: Five months ago I flew to the tropical[热带的] city to spend a weekend with the boys of One Direction, and now I was heading back to meet another of my favorite pop stars, Austin Mahone.
The 18-year-old star gives me a big hug when I arrive and makes me feel right at home in the studio—the legendary[传奇的] Hit Factory. In fact, he moved from Texas to Miami about a year ago (with his mom in tow[在一起]) to record his highly anticipated[预期的] debut[处女作] album, due[预定的] out this spring.
“I record nowhere but Miami—it’s a good environment to write songs and collaborate[合作],” Austin reveals[揭示]. Of the upcoming album, he says, “It’s different from What About Love and Say Somethin. I want to grow my fan base.”
For a new artist, the singer has already soared[高飞,翱翔]—there have been hit singles, an MTV Video Music Award, and an opening act for Taylor Swift on her Red tour. And then, of course, there’s his not-so-small loyal fan base: his“Mahomies,” almost five million strong on Twitter alone. “They actually come to the studio a lot,” Austin says. “If I tweet I’m coming here, there will be girls outside the gate, just waiting. It’s pretty crazy.”
In a flash, Austin runs into the vocal[歌唱的] booth[棚] to record a bridge注1, and I take my seat next to his best friend, Alex Constancio(who helped Austin achieve fame with their YouTube videos), while he watches in the control room. After a few hours of work, the boys head outside to the basketball court[球场] for a break. “I love basketball,” Austin says. When he’s not in the studio or on tour, you can find him tending[注意,关心] to his schoolwork (he’s homeschooled), going to church every Sunday, and enjoying the city where the heat is on. “I like to go to the beach and hit the gym,” he says. “The gym is sometimes the highlight of my day.”
We head back into the studio and start blasting[发出尖响的声音] Drake (one of Austin’s favorites—and mine) before the work begins again. “You get only one chance, and you have to make the most of every opportunity,” he says. “I want to look back and be like, ‘Man, I killed that.’” Between his outlook[看法,态度] and his work ethic[道德规范], I have no doubt in my mind that Austin will shoot and score注2.
