体内的化学元素绝大多数来源于水和食物,许多与人类男子生育功能密切相关。维持正常生育力必需的元素有锌、钙、硒、锰、碘等。锌与性腺发育有关,能影响精子代谢,精液中锌含量与精子活动度、密度成正比关系。钙可通过刺激细胞的糖酵解过程而加强精子活动,但即使是必需元素,当过量时可损害生育力,如高硒、高锰都可导致男子不育。损害生育力的元素有铜、锡、镍、镉、铅等,故有抗生育效应。
