需要处理的信息容量迅速增加着,同时对计算能力要求越来越大。串行数字电子计算机大概只能应付目前的需要,但有一,二个例外。甚至在目前也难以想象有足够的计算能力来处理从地球资源卫星返回的图象数据。如果数据处理方面的发展要求继续以同样的速率增加,那么对计算能力的更高要求,只好由电子学或光学或两者相结合的并行处理来实现。尽管数字计算机有了巨大的发展,到目前为止在市场上还不能买到并行数字电子计算机。甚至研制中的机器看来也没有多大的希望。光学系统是一种天然的并行处理机,因此,它的潜力是值得考虑的。
The amount of information that needs to be processed is rapidly increasing, while the computing power is increasing. Serial digital computer probably only meet the current needs, but with one or two exceptions. It is hard to imagine even now that there is sufficient computational power to process the image data returned from Earth Resources satellites. If data processing requirements continue to grow at the same rate, the higher requirements for computing power have to be met by electronics or optics or by a combination of the two. Despite the tremendous growth of digital computers, so far no parallel digital computers have been commercially available. Even the machines under development do not seem to have much hope. Optical system is a natural parallel processor, therefore, its potential is worth considering.
