Solid atoms like laboratory predecessor of the Institute of metal high-resolution electron microscopy and field ion microscope - atomic probe laboratory, was founded in 1981. Since then, laboratories have done a great deal of research work on metals and alloys, ceramics and semiconductors, and catalysts, at the level of atomic resolution. Its work is characterized by direct imaging of the atomic configuration of the interior and the surface of the solid at the atomic or molecular scale and single atom measurement to give visual information on the atomic arrangement and species of the material structure and defects.
