BT & D Technologies of the United States announced that they have developed a new line of transceivers that will provide the full performance of fiber-optic distributed data interfaces to network users who already have shielded copper twisted pair or unshielded copper twisted pair cables installed. According to Mike Hartmann, manager of BT & D data communications products, end-users are not required to retrofit their fiber optic cables to gain access to fiber-distributed data interface performance. This transceiver can also be used as an introduction permutation for existing fiber distribution data interface transceivers. The company estimates that over 80% of fiber-optic data distribution network connections installed in 1993 would be twisted pair copper connections, driving the strategy of providing hardware for both short-term and long-term fiber optic cable problems.
