Objective: To observe whether there is calcitonin gene related peptide involved in the onset of trigeminal neuralgia and to deepen the understanding of the pathogenesis of trigeminal neuralgia. Methods: The contents of calcitonin gene - related peptide in peripheral jugular venous blood, elbow vein blood and ipsilateral jugular venous blood after operation were measured by radioimmunoassay in 7 patients with trigeminal neuralgia. Results: The content of calcitonin gene-related peptide in ipsilateral jugular venous blood was found to be significantly higher than that in elbow vein and ipsilateral jugular vein after pain onset. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that over-synthesis and release of calcitonin gene-related peptides in the pain-supporting nerves of trigeminal neuralgia may contribute to the release of substance P, leading to paroxysmal severe pain and local neurogenic inflammation.
