Writing anything about the unique beauty of Xiamen—especially its Gulang Island—would be a waste of ink. In fact, you can get at least 86,000,000 results in less than a second if you type “Xiamen”into Google…and the 1)figure is increasing.
However, here I am, holding a pen and ready to let my emotions and memories flow.
It was three autumns ago that I first set foot in this 2)coastal city. Having heard at least 20 “oh it’s a nice place” before I actually got there, or simply being lazy, rather, I hadn’t even been bothered enough to look for travelling tips.
“I’m here to study, not for fun,” I thought quite 3)innocently. Until the second year of university, when many of my distant friends started to 4)contact me on QQ 5)casually asking, “How’s school going? I heard it’s in Xiamen.”
“Yeah yeah,” I 6)replied, thinking to myself, “Living in this city can really help me catch up with some of my friends.” Exactly. They then “naturally” 7)mentioned their purpose.
“Oh by the way, I’m considering paying a visit to Xiamen for a couple of days.”
My reply, “Come, I’m more than happy to be your tour guide.”
Never did I know that I would be so 8)fed up with all these “travelling classmates” by the end of my 9)junior year.
The travelling 10)routine that everybody needs to go through is sure to cover the following sights: Gulang Island, Zhongshan Road, Nanputuo Temple, Xiamen University and the beach. You might even consider places like Xiamen Wangshi 11)Botanic Garden, Garden Show Park etc.
But for someone like me who has been used as a tour guide by my friends from all over the country, listening to people’s 12)astonishment and camera 13)shutters was 14)a pain in the backside.
Until the moment I saw Simon (my boyfriend) walking towards me with his huge 15)back-pack on in Xiamen airport. He had traveled all the way from Guangzhou to see me. My 16)boredom from staying in the same, small city magically turned into a travel mood all of a sudden.
Zengcuoan is where the first two of the three hotels we were staying in were. Late as it was when we first got there, at certain bus stops you could easily find 17)barbecue 18)stands, fruit stands, bars, seafood restaurants, milk-tea shops etc.
The first hotel we stayed in was a little beach 19)shack. It was very 20)quaint and pretty with pink wallpaper. There was a little cat hanging around the hotel that we became friends with called “Seaweed.” He followed us round the whole time when we were there.
The second day we went to Gulang Island, the place where everyone was talking about. It’s an island obviously, but it’s actually like a small country out there floating in the sea. There are two ways to get to this little paradise; you can either get a ticket from the ticket stand or go for a private 21)speed boat which costs a little bit more.
The island is filled with fresh sunlight during early summer and everywhere you can see tourists carrying their cameras taking photos like crazy! For them, every little corner is a unique piece of 22)scenery that they couldn’t possibly see in a modern city.

As a Westerner, Simon was quite surprised at the amount of 23)DSLRs on this island. He thought that we should use our eyes to record the beauty instead of the 24)lenses. We walked along the old pathways and through the little streets. It was not the destination that truly mattered but the journey that we had exploring the European-styled buildings and local seafood and tropical fruit.
My favourite local food was “Hai Li Jian”, an 25)oyster 26)omelet, which is also a very popular Taiwanese street 27)snack. I would also 28)recommend juice from “Malasun Juice Maker,” their best 29)feature is that they use more than three big oranges to make a cup of pure orange juice. It’s because they use real orange juice instead of water that makes it so 30)appealing. If you happen to be a big fan of pies and cakes, I highly recommend you to go to a cake shop called “Babycat Private Home-made Cake House”. Not only will the fine 31)stuffing of the cakes attract you to come back for a second time, but also the 32)delicate 33)decoration and homey 34)atmosphere of the cake shop.

Our last hotel was actually on the island facing Xiamen and was called Longtou No.1 Hotel. Briefly living on the island allowed us to appreciate the 35)serene nature of the place in the nighttime. When Simon held my hand walking in the moonlight and as I felt the gentle 36)breeze coming in from the sea, an idea suddenly hit me: in years to come I could retire here.
Then I realized Xiamen has never 37)abandoned me, or been bored by me. It was telling me to bring the right person and explore “true happiness”: it was actually as simple as sharing a 38)sakya; drinking from the same cup of Zhang Sanfeng milk tea, or falling asleep on the golden beach with our bare feet being 39)teased by the waves drawing up and down the sea shore.
