文章以精炼为贵,以烦冗为病。写作应该“以少胜多”,而不能像“韩信将兵,多多益善”。这是我国古典文学的优良传统,也是古代学者在文风问题上的一致主张。上古时代,文字书写在竹片、木板和丝织品上面,既费物料又费人力,因之一般记载都极简短;及于中古、近古,随着纸笔和印刷技术的发明改进,书写传播大为便利,文字记载便日益趋于繁复冗长。清代史学家章学诚在《乙卯剳记》中说的一段话,颇能道出文章由简趋繁的物质上的原因:
