The Antarctic continent accounts for about 9% of the Earth’s total surface area, with a total area of 13.5 million km2. However, only about 2% of the Antarctic continent is ice-free and the rest of the area is covered by snow and ice. Uranium resources in this continent have not yet fully explored. In 1976, for the first time in the Antarctic, a systematic evaluation of uranium resources was conducted as part of the United States Antarctic Research Program and is named “Antarctic International Radiometric Survey.” The program is jointly implemented by scientists at the University of Kansas and the Federal Republic of Germany. The measurement lasted for three Antarctic field seasons and will continue for four years. Due to snow and ice cover, outcrops, cold climate and poor terrain, measurement activities in the Antarctic are both difficult and costly. Since its commencement in 1976, it has been estimated that the radiometric survey area is a strip of 9000 km long and 50 m wide with an actual survey area of only 225 km 2, accounting for less than 0.1% of the total exposed area of the Antarctic continent.
