Victorian Britain is a world full of contradictions: economic growth and social chaos coexist, the symbiosis of democratic consciousness and class contradictions, scientific discovery and doubt of religious belief, and feminism challenge the patriarchal society. Such a cultural context has hit people, especially intellectuals, and made them confused and lost, even contradictory. As a writer who was extremely sensitive to society at that time, Mrs. Gaskell highlighted the contradiction in this context in her masterpiece “Mary Barton”. This article attempts to interpret the contradictory consciousness embodied in “Mary Barton” from the perspective of petty bourgeoisie in which Mrs. Gaskell is located, religious beliefs and the position of female writers in society at the time.
